Reports
Reports have been restructured in ConsoleWorks 4.7. The three main changes are 1) the addition of a report output component that is generated when a report definition is run 2) the rolling up of all the old configuration reports (Consoles, Events, Scans, Severities, Users and Profiles) into a new Configuration report that allows for selection of any of the available ConsoleWorks components, pieces of the ConsoleWorks components, and associations from one ConsoleWorks component to another ConsoleWorks component and 3) the ability to schedule a report to be run on a recurring basis.
Report Definitions and Report Outputs
In ConsoleWorks 4.6 and earlier when reports were run it was up to the user to either print the report, save the report from the browser’s File->Save menu, or copy and paste the report into a location for saving (email, Word document, etc.). In ConsoleWorks 4.7 there are two ways to run a report - a test run, or a run.
The test run behaves similarly to ConsoleWorks 4.6 in that the report is displayed in a new browser window. This allows the user to see what the report output will be without saving the report definition. Once the report definition has been saved the user can also run the report. This will create an output that is accessible via the “Outputs” button on the report config page or via the Reports->Report Output menu in the left hand panel. The output will be available for viewing from one login session to another.
Reports in ConsoleWorks 4.7 consist of the definition of the report which includes a name, description, the type of report as well as the various parameters which are dependent on the type of report. Once the report definition is run a report output is created and saved and this report output can be viewed any time until the report output is deleted.
Emailing Reports
ConsoleWorks 5.0 adds the ability to send the output of any report as an email attachment. All report type configuration pages have been updated to include an Email Addresses field where email recipients can be specified. Multiple email addresses should be separated by a comma. This feature is dependent upon enabling and configuring ConsoleWorks SMTP Email Services (found at ADMIN > SMTP Configuration in the left-hand Nav Menu).
The Configuration Report Type
ConsoleWorks 4.6 had 9 configuration-based reports available for selection: Consoles, Events, Scans, Severities, Users, Profiles, Report Wizard Console Name (from ConsoleWorks Configuration), Report Wizard Event Name (from ConsoleWorks Configuration), Report Wizard Username (from ConsoleWorks Configuration). All of these reports have been replaced with the new ConsoleWorks 4.7 Configuration Report.
Components in ConsolesWorks (e.g. Console, Event, Profile, etc.) are made up of Component Parts. The Component Parts vary based on the Component (e.g. Consoles are made up of a Name, Description, Connector, Port, etc. and Events are made up of Name, Description, Pattern Line 1, Severity, etc.). The new Configuration Report allows selection of Components (e.g. Console, Event, Group, Profile, Severity, etc.) and selection of Component Parts. Whenever a Component is selected the Name is automatically reported along with any other selected Component Parts. In addition Associated Components may be selected and reported.
Scheduling Reports
New to ConsoleWorks 4.7 is the ability to schedule reports to be run on a recurring basis. A Schedule is a new ConsoleWorks component available under the ConsoleWorks Tools menu. Schedules are defined to run at a particular time/date and then can repeat every n minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years. When a report definition is associated with the Schedule the report will automatically run and the report output will be saved for later viewing.
